Ready, Camera, Veneers! How Much Enamel Needs to Be Removed for a Smile Like the Stars

As you watch one of your favorite movies for the umpteenth time, you ask, “How does that star have such a beautiful smile? I wish I could have a smile like that.” The truth is that a Hollywood smile is well within your reach! Many celebrities have received veneers, which are made of a dental porcelain, to cover up little imperfections in their natural teeth like gaps, discoloration, chips, and more. Avenue Dental provides this service to everyday people, not just those who walk the red carpet.

Before you rush to our office, there is something you should know about this treatment: it involves removing some of your enamel structure. But that’s nothing to worry about! In this post, you’ll learn more about this process, why and how much enamel needs to be removed, and why your smile is worth the time and effort.

The Veneer Process

Before you can understand the reasoning behind it, you need to fully understand the entire treatment process. Getting veneers goes as follows:

  • You will visit with your dentist to determine whether veneers are the right choice for you. This includes a thorough exam and discussion about what to expect.
  • The dentist may administer a local anesthetic before removing a small portion of the outward-facing surface of your teeth.
  • Then, they will collect a couple of impressions and send this information to a dental lab. Temporary veneers will also be put into place.
  • The lab will manufacture your custom veneers based on the impressions, ensuring a perfect, natural-looking fit.
  • When they’re complete, you’ll go back to your dentist’s office to have the veneers bonded to your teeth.

Why Enamel Must Be Removed

Does enamel really need to be taken away for veneers? In short, yes! Although these coverings are fabricated to be very thin, they do take up a little bit of space. Without enamel removal, they would protrude and stand out in a negative way.

That being said, keep in mind that only a tiny bit of enamel (about 0.5mm or about the thickness of a piece of paper) needs to come off only on the front surface of your teeth, meaning that most of your natural tooth is still preserved behind the veneer.

Why Veneers Are Worth the Effort

With veneers being a permanent change to your tooth structure, you may wonder whether the end result justifies the effort that goes into it. Although it requires two visits and enamel removal, veneers are worth the sacrifice! They reflect light just like real teeth, so they look natural. They also are extremely durable and stain resistant, meaning your dream smile can last for many years.

Hollywood actors aren’t the only ones who can feel confident about their smiles. By giving up a little of your enamel, you can set yourself up with a radiant smile that attracts the right kind of attention.
