What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge consists of one or more prosthetic teeth, which are solid, bonded together in a row. These replace the missing teeth in the middle. On each end of the prosthetic is a hollow crown that is attached either to a natural tooth or to a dental implant.

In order to qualify for a dental bridge, you must have at least one healthy tooth (or implant) on both sides of the gap in your smile. You must also be in good oral health and have enough jawbone to support your remaining natural teeth or implants.

Types of Dental Bridges

Although each dental bridge is customized to the individual patient’s needs, there are generally two kinds of bridges. When we meet with you to discuss your needs and after we’ve had the chance to examine your mouth, we can recommend the type that may best suit your smile.

Traditional Dental Bridge

Traditionally, dental bridges are able to replace one to three consecutive missing teeth, and they stay in place by adhering to two healthy, natural teeth. The process of getting a traditional bridge is much like getting dental crowns. The anchor teeth on each end of the gap are reduced to make way for the dental bridge. Then, impressions are taken so that the custom bridge can be constructed in the dental lab. Finally, the patient returns to our office to have the bridge adhered to the anchor teeth.

Implant Bridge

An implant bridge works much like a traditional bridge, except that it anchors to two implants. As a result, an implant bridge can replace even more missing teeth in a row! Instead of getting a separate implant per missing tooth, you could replace three to five lost teeth with just two implants, allowing you to be more efficient with your treatment.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Bridge

A dental bridge is a unique, efficient solution for tooth loss. In some scenarios, bridges can be more affordable than other alternatives. Designed to replace one or more teeth in a row, bridges tend to be more stable than partial dentures, which only sit on top of the gums and use clasps to stay in place. Bridges also usually last significantly longer than partial dentures (up to twice as long), and implant bridges can go even further. By securing to natural teeth or implants, dental bridges can give you more confidence in your complete smile.
