Helping You Navigate Your Dental Insurance

Older patients sharing healthy smiles outdoors

Many patients get frustrated when it comes to navigating their dental insurance due to the variance in coverage from plan-to-plan and all of the complicated jargon. Instead of worrying about having to do all of the heavy lifting yourself by calling your dental insurance company and doing research online, let us help! Our financial coordinator is a great resource to have on your side, and we know what we’re talking about since we deal with dental insurance companies on a daily basis. Below, we’ve outlined some insurance basics to help you get started.

Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

To understand your dental insurance plan, you’ll need to know these key terms:

  • Premium: Your premium is the amount you pay each month or year to get coverage.
  • Deductible: The deductible is a set amount of money (that your insurance company decides on) that you’ll need to pay out-of-pocket before they begin covering treatments or services from your dentist. The average dental insurance deductible is between $50 and $100.
  • Maximum: The maximum is just what it sounds like, a capped-off amount of money that your dental insurance company will pay out for your treatments every calendar year.

It’s important to note that every dental insurance plan varies, so to learn what your specific maximum, deductible, and premium are, contact your dental insurance company directly and be sure to ask!

What Does Your Dental Insurance Plan Cover?

Every dental insurance plan is different, but typically, they use a 100-80-50 coverage model. What this means is that they cover 100 percent of preventive dental care, like checkups and cleanings, 80 percent of basic services, such as fillings, and 50 percent of more serious procedures, like tooth extractions. Due to this coverage structure, the best way to save money and prevent out-of-pocket costs is to keep up with your regular preventive care to keep small problems from developing into more serious ones down the road.
